The Photography Program at Oakland Community College provides instruction in camera principles, digital imaging, film processing and printing as well as aesthetic awareness. Analog courses introduce students to the world of printing Black & White materials in the darkroom. Color courses (at the Royal Oak Campus only) cover printing and processing as well as non-silver emulsions. The Digital Imaging courses provide instruction for everyone from the beginner through the advanced photography student. Computer applications focus on the use of digital cameras, image capture and scanning, file management, image enhancement and manipulation using programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Bridge on state of the art Macintosh computers. Courses in the History of Photography, Digital Video (Orchard Ridge Campus only), Studio Photography, and Special Projects provide a complete photographic educational experience.
Students may take classes without declaring a major in our Photographic Technology Program; courses may have prerequisites. See the “Courses” and “Program” links above for more details.
Students are required to provide their own analog and/or digital cameras (depending on class), film and printing paper to complete class projects. These requirements, in addition to other materials, will be discussed at the first meeting of each course.
The “Syllabi/Lab Hours” link at the top of this page serves as an archive for the handouts required for some of the classes and lab information. Hopefully, these information links will assist you in choosing your courses as well as your study of photography at Oakland Community College.
